Dr. Katie LeClair recently joined the Baxter Hospital staff in a small town. The evening she is on duty, Eugene Lowe, a new patient checks in with suspicious injuries. His conflicting accounts of how his injuries occurred raises concerns between Dr. LeClair and her colleague. Local residents give an account of Eugene Lowe’s circumstances which leads Dr. LeClair to investigate a thirteen year murder case and a possible miscarriage of justice.
The story begins when Eugene Lowe returns to his home town after serving a ten year prison sentence for murder. He is pursued by someone who has vandalized his mother’s house and Eugene lives in constant fear of his safety. The community believes he is guilty, but as Dr. LeClaire investigates, there appears to be cover ups and lapses in the original handling of the case.
The case takes a turn when a medical school student who was connected with the case is reported missing. As the investigation progresses, Dr. LeClair expresses doubts about Eugene’s innocence.
As the plot progresses, revealing more evidence which keeps the reader guessing until the very end. The mystery is a light read that will appeal to many mystery fans, especially those of Tess Gerritsen It should be noted that this is a sequel to the book Unnatural Causes.
