When Cara Hargraves discovers a WWII journal, she begins a journey not just to discover the owner, but also one of healing in the wake of her divorce and parents’ death. The journal belongs to a Louise Keane, a nineteen-year-old from a small village who dreams of more during wartime. After meeting an RAF pilot who is suddenly deployed in the midst of their romance, Louise leaves home and joins the women’s auxiliary branch of the British army, eventually being assigned a position as a gunner girl. The romance with her pilot continue through letters, but journal entries reveal something might be amiss between the two. Cara, meanwhile, forms a bond with her neighbor who helps her discover the truth about Louise. In the midst of learning the woman’s story, Cara also learns the secrets her grandmother has kept about her own service in WWII.
The Light over London is a dual storyline novel that highlights the strength and bravery of women who served in the war. Switching between the two stories and journal entries helps build the intrigue into the mystery of Louise to the point the reader wants to know the truth as much as Cara. With both women dealing with matters of the heart, it’s easy to get invested in this story.
