With her father dead and her mother unwell, Louisa has not had an easy life.  Her Uncle Stephen is an all around ne'er do well fellow who teaches his niece to become a pickpocket, amongst other things. Fed up with her current situation, Louisa seizes a job opportunity to become a companion of sorts to the Mitford sisters. On her way to the interview, Louisa falls on the tracks at Victoria Station and nearly ruins her chances of getting the position by arriving very late.  Fortunately, the lady of the house is willing to see her the next day, where Louisa accepts the position.  She quickly becomes nursemaid, confidante and chaperone to all of the Mitford girls, but especially Nancy.

At the same time that Louisa falls on the tracks at the train station, a murder is committed on one of the trains.  In this fictional retelling of a real-life unsolved murder mystery, war nurse Florence Nightingale Shore (goddaughter to the famous Florence Nightingale), is murdered on the train from London.  The rest of the story tells how the murderer is found out, with a plot twist as the big reveal happens during Nancy's 18th birthday party.

Jessica Fellowes is the niece of Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes and has written companion books in the series.  Mitford Murders is her first in a series of Golden Age mysteries.  It is a must-read if you enjoy British historical mysteries or historical fiction in general.
