This is the story of Alice Roosevelt Longworth, President Theodore Roosevelt's oldest and wildest daughter. She spent her teenage years in the White House, rebelling against social norms and getting attention from the press for her wild behavior. Even her bright and bold clothing got attention from the press, so much so that she had a signature color named after her--Alice Blue. Alice did not have an easy childhood, often seeking her father's approval by being inquisitive and later getting involved in politics.
The story begins in 1901 when Theodore Roosevelt was the
Vice President and follows her life up until her death in 1976. She saw both World Wars, her father’s terms as President, and even meets Queen Elizabeth II. This
is the story of Alice’s life as daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother full of
great joy and great heartache. Alice has
a very political life without ever wishing to hold office herself. All the men
in her life are politicians and she seeks to influence world events through
those relationships. She is a tireless
campaigner for her father and her husband.
The story is told with verve and sassiness just the way
Alice lived her life and live she did! I
enjoyed the fast pace, the frankness in the telling of the story, and the
historical detail. If you really enjoy
stories of women in history whose stories are not well known, you won’t want to
miss this story.
