Deeply moving and beautiful, Costalegre explores the range of human emotion, as well as mankind’s connection to art and those who create it. The book is set during the time period of Hitler’s rise to power as he is rounding up all those who don’t conform to Nazi ideology.
Fifteen year old Lara’s mother, Leonora Calaway, a wealthy heiress with a profound love of the art world attempts to save the few artists she can by taking them to a remote area of Mexico known as Costalegre.
Upon arriving, Leonora decides to stay for good, opening up a museum and showcasing the artists’ work. The story unfolds through the voice of Lara, as she navigates her way through the many joys and sorrows of life in the jungle, as well as the painful and strained relationship between her and her mother.
Full of wonder and curiosity, we watch as she embarks on a journey toward love and identity, striving to find her place among the artists. Costalegre is a unique and touching story, I highly recommend it!
