Raised by a single mother who works as a domestic helper for a wealthy woman, Ruth is an African-American widow of a second-tour Afghanistan hero. Her son, Edison, is a high school honors student who is set to attend college. They live in a predominantly white area of Connecticut where Ruth is the only African American staff member in the maternity ward of Mercy-West Haven hospital where she has faithfully worked for the last twenty years.
During a shift she agreed to take in covering for someone else, Ruth gets blamed for the murder of a baby who happens to be the son of white supremacist parents. The story is told from the perspectives of Ruth, Kennedy, her honest and well-intended white lawyer, and Turk, the baby’s father. As the story develops, the reader is confronted with their own questions and biases in regards to prejudice, privilege, and compassion. "Small Great Things" is a book that is inspirational and provides a unique commentary on who we are as a society, I highly recommend it!
