A Long Petal of the Sea by Isabel Allende is a wonderful historical fiction novel
set amid the backdrop of the brutal realities of the Spanish Civil War in the 1930’s
and through the turbulent and often deadly political climate of South America’s
Chile during the last decades of the previous century. The book spans over 50
years in the lives of its principal characters, Victor and Roser, an unlikely couple
thrown together in the midst of the suffering and chaos around them. As events
unfold, we are brought into their lives and those around them as they navigate the
twists and turns of a journey of escape, taking them through several countries until
reaching Chile. At its core, this is a story of refugees and immigrants as they
struggle through some of the most difficult circumstances one can imagine having
to endure. With themes of love, hope, disappointment and perseverance, it is sure
to touch the hearts and minds of almost anyone who reads it.
