The Dutch House, a deeply heartwarming and
remarkably well-written novel, follows the story of a sister and brother, Maeve
and Danny, wrestling their way through shared tribulations. Lacking
emotional investment from their father and wishing to not disturb their already
troubled mother, the two children are left alone to fend for themselves. Although grand, and comforting in its own
way, the beautiful Dutch house is the only thing on which the family can depend
on.
As the children grow up craving stability
and emotional security, they find refuge in each other and encourage one
another through the difficult times that they encounter. With the passing of time, the siblings
unravel the significance of many important events in their lives and piece
together the shared hurt within them both. The dialogue between the two
throughout the book is expressive and diverse: sometimes achingly sorrowful,
sweet, or incredibly witty. Their
compassion for each other and the bond that they share is sure to stir the heart
of any reader, as well as serve as a reminder of the significance of empathy
through trying times.
